Ly and Lala have always been farmers on the outskirts of the airport in Madagascar’s capital. They have four children. The Ministry of Agriculture trained them to use pesticides and other chemicals, often ‘made in China for Africa’. These products remain expensive, but fortunately Japanese aid is on hand to provide them with sacks of ammonium sulphate sourced from a mine partly owned by… Japanese interests! The kit would not be complete without the non-reproducible seeds from the Chinese, which prevent the farmers from achieving any independence. They politely accept all the gifts in the hope of receiving a title deed promised by the Ministry 25 years ago. But his eldest daughter and her husband are looking to make a break for it towards agroecology. Whilst President Rajoelina and his cronies have stolen from and filled in their rice field, they are joining Gen Z to denounce this corrupt government.
